FAQ
Whether you're a first-time attendee or a returning flyer, here’s everything you need to know about coming to a South Australian Rocketry launch.
Who is allowed at the launch pads?
Only current, paid-up members of the Tripoli Rocketry Association (TRA) are permitted at or near the launch pads. This includes students flying as part of recognised university rocketry teams, as long as they are current TRA members.
Unfortunately, photographers, spectators, assistants, or coordinators who are not TRA members cannot enter the pad area, even if they're helping with the event.
This rule exists due to strict insurance and safety requirements and helps ensure our launches remain safe and compliant with Tripoli regulations.
Do I need to be a club member to attend a launch?
No — anyone is welcome to come and observe a launch as a spectator, and we encourage curious newcomers to come check it out! If you want to launch a rocket, you'll need to be a member of both:
-
The Tripoli Rocketry Association
-
The South Australian Rocketry (SAR) Club
We also offer affordable one-day launch options for those who want to try it out before committing to full membership.
What should I bring to a launch?
Launch days are often held in remote locations and can run for several hours. Conditions may include sun, wind, dust, or cool temperatures, so it's best to come prepared. Here’s a suggested checklist:
-
Hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses
-
Long-sleeved shirt for sun protection
-
Warm layers (mornings can be chilly)
-
Sturdy, closed-toe footwear (it may be muddy or dusty)
-
At least 2 litres of water
-
Snacks and food for the whole day
-
Deck chair, folding seat, or picnic rug
-
Binoculars to watch high-flying rockets
-
Your camera and your rockets!
Don’t forget any specific tools or parts you may need for prepping or repairing your rocket at the range.
Can kids or families attend?
Yes! Spectators of all ages are welcome to attend and watch — many families bring children to see the action. However, all minors must be supervised at all times, and no one under 18 may enter the pad area without being a registered and insured Tripoli Junior member. Safety is our top priority, and everyone must follow pad and range safety rules.
What types of rockets can I fly?
Depending on your membership and certification level, you can fly:
-
Low-power rockets (A–D motors) – Great for beginners!
-
Mid-power rockets (E–G motors) – Requires a bit more planning
-
High-power rockets (H and above) – Requires Tripoli Level 1, 2, or 3 certification
Not certified yet? No worries! Come talk to us — we can help guide you through the certification process, and many members start at lower power and work their way up.
What safety rules should I be aware of?
Safety is the cornerstone of our launch events. Here are some quick rules to keep in mind:
-
Always follow the Range Safety Officer’s (RSO) instructions
-
Do not approach launch pads without permission
-
Keep a safe distance from all active launch pads
-
Listen to all briefings and announcements
